The Arafura Games 2005 will be held from May 14 to 21, Minister for Sport & Recreation John Ah Kit announced yesterday.
"The Government has acted quickly to re-establish the Arafura Games in the international sporting calendar and to attract the return of local, national and international athletes," Minister Ah Kit said.
"Protocol sees the dates for the next Arafura Games decided at the Heads of Delegation meeting during the biennial sporting event. With no meeting held due to the Games being cancelled, we needed to be proactive about the new dates."
Staff from the Arafura Games office - in the Department of Community Development, Sport & Cultural Affairs - have consulted with the member countries about the new dates and they have given their full support to the 2005 event.
"More than 20 countries were expected for the Arafura Games 2003 and these countries - ranging from Tahiti to New Zealand - have expressed their strong interest in competing in 2005," Minister Ah Kit said.
