Welcome to our first Intercentre Shield Competition for 2003.

The Intercentre Shield is contested over three rounds with centres from all parts of the Territory vying for the honour of being the Shield winner.

The event is for athletes aged from 6 years to Under 18 and competitors earn points for their centre and the highest overall points score is declared the Shield winner.

Events occur simultaneously around the Territory and results are merged to determine the finishing position of each competitor relative to their peers in other parts of the NT.

Centres earn bonus points for having the highest percentage of their members entering the interclub event.

Rural Athletic Centre won their first Shield in 2000 and the 2002 winner was Alice Springs Junior Athletic Club.  We want to make Katherine the winner of this year’s Shield.

The approximate order of events for tonight’s competition is on page 2 of this newsletter

Competition on 31st May 2003

NOTE that this is a Saturday – There will be no competition on Friday 30th.  It is the second round of the Intercentre Shield Competition and is being hosted by Katherine.  As the regular Darwin competitions are not being held during that week we expect to have a considerable number of competitors from the Darwin based clubs joining us.  Even though the Shield is for athletes under 18, an invitation has been issued to all senior athletes to join in at Katherine.  This will give all our athletes the opportunity to see what competition they are up against and to compete with others of their own age group.

As we are the hosts for this round we want to show the other clubs how well we can run an event such as this, so would all people who can officiate or help please give their name to the information desk.  Remember that the canteen proceeds are our main source of funds and this is an excellent opportunity to make some extra money if we have enough volunteers.

Centre Championships

Katherine Athletics Centre Championships will be held on the 13th, 14th and 15th of June, so keep this week-end free.  Points are allocated to all competitors in each event and the top three athletes in each age group are awarded medals.  It is exciting competition and we have a barbeque lunch afterwards followed by the medal presentations.
