198 athletes from all over the Territory including Alice Springs, Arnhem Land, Tennant Creek, Katherine and Darwin competed in the NT Athletic Championships 3-5 September 2004 at the Arafura Stadium in Darwin.
The Championships take place over three days with 18 hours of competition. Dr Chris Burns MLA opened the event. During the championships a number of important presentations took place. Paul Mitchener of Rural Athletics Centre was awarded the NTA's highest honour, the Don Dick Memorial. Darwin Athletics Centre achieved an enviable double when they were firstly announced as the winner of the Inter Club Shield that has been contested over three rounds during the athletics season and then secondly by winning the Champion Club Trophy contested solely over this weekend. Rural Athletics won the coveted March Past Trophy.
The Athletics community lost a favourite son this year and a moving presentation was made of the inaugural Bradley Abala Memorial Trophy. Steve Darling of Alice Springs spoke in honor of Bradley followed by Bradley's family presenting the trophy to the 2004 winner, Reily Horan.
The most outstanding athlete awards went to Ben Fuller 9 years from Alice Springs and Robyn Wattam 10 years Darwin Athletics. Ben claimed 5 records during the event and Robyn claimed 6.
In the distance events there was a much anticipated third show down between Andrew Kittle (ASRW) and Garth Small (DRW) in the 1500m. In a thrilling final 10m first Andrew led then Garth then Andrew again to win by just 3 tenths of a second. The boys ran 4.29.6 and 4.29.9 to be just 7 seconds outside a 15 year old record for tis event. Dingo Hall
The Championships were bolstered by the seven athletes from Ramingining and Gove that competed over the weekend. These athletes are commended for their courage and outstanding sporting nature. They collected a total of 15 medals including 5 gold. Ralph Dhamarranydji won the under 14 High Jump with 1.50m in a very exciting competition. Lee Gordon and Catherine Scott organised the involvement of these athletes.
